September 2017

Baby loss and bereavement care
The theme of September's meeting was baby loss and bereavement care with Cambridgeshire SANDS. Twenty-five people attended, including 1/3 service users, a Maternity commissioner, the Head of Midwifery, a bereavement midwife and a consultant obstetrician. We heard from five bereaved parents who's babies had died during pregnancy or neonatally and we looked at the 44 responses to the baby loss survey. Together we came up with ideas and suggestions for improvements, many of which were low cost and high impact.

Here is the summary report from the meeting, reproduced here with permission from the parents.

July 2017

Twenty-six people attended the first Rosie Maternity Voices (RMV) meeting of parent volunteers (service users), Rosie Hospital staff and representatives from local charities, community and voluntary groups; all coming together to improve Rosie maternity services for all.

Some of the topics discussed were:
  • A funding grant was confirmed from Addenbrookes Charitable Trust (ACT) which will be used to create a website, parent survey and fund volunteers' expenses for meetings.
  • Between meetings, parent volunteers are actively seeking to connect with vulnerable and hard-to-reach groups so everyone's voice is heard (please get in touch if this is something you can help us with).
  • A page on the website will be created explaining the various mechanisms for feedback and complaints, including how to get immediate support during labour or on a ward.
  • The waterbirth sieves in Rosie Birth Centre did run out *temporarily* however new stock is expected any day. Women are not expected to bring their own (phew!).
  • The postnatal visit pattern by midwives was discussed in detail and the importance of women getting timely visits and support in those early days.
  • There is some interesting work taking place already in response to PALS complaints, RMV will help parents hear about progress via social media.
  • In Oct/Nov 20+ midwives will train in Hypnobirthing and classes will start to be offered at the Rosie (there will be a charge but it will be lower than private classes).
  • Themes for future meetings: baby loss & bereavement care; homebirth; infant feeding support.
